The New England colonies made their money by making things with lumber
The New England colonies made their money by building things out of wood and lumber. Some of these things include ships to trade, houses to live in, and covered wagons travel in [think that last one was right].
If you're in America then there are a few ways. Up north in new England then you would make your money fishing and cutting down hardwoods for English ships. if you were in the Atlantic states you would be planting and selling tobacco. if you were in New York, jersey, and massachusets you would be getting lobsters and cutting down trees.
The Duke of York founded New York in 1664.
Some of the American colonists after defeating the British were ready, in their glee of victory, to make George Washington king. Not only did Washington reject that idea out of hand but the idea of a new king was not the idea of most colonists. They wanted and received a republican form of government where power was not concentrated in the hands of a few.

During the American Revolution, France supplied the new American government with money (gold and French Francs), soldiers, and the French Navy. After the Americans defeated the British at the Battle of Saratoga, the French realized the American colonists could defeat the British regulars, and that helping the Americans would potentially weaken their hated British rivals.
They had very little hard currency and relied on the barter system.
New York was settled in 1624. If your house was made of nails they would burn the house down to get them. Few colonists had money.
