Women's changing role affected families because of the change in home life. Women no longer wanted to be known as just a "house cleaner". Women began going out to work, protesting, or during the time of 'flappers', were going out with their friends. Women were not as often home with their families and placed more responsiblity on the husband and children.

* For centuries women in most countries 'should be seen, but not heard.' If single she did not work (unless poverty stricken) and helped out around home and when married was to do chores, raise children and abide by her husband's rules. Women were not allowed to work (it made the husband feel that he could not provide for his family and was simply not the thing to do.) The big break came during WWII when men went off to war and women had to do men's jobs such a packing parachutes, munition factories and even building planes (thus the term, 'Rosie The Riveter.") Once the war ended the American and Canadian governments told the wives nicely that their men were home and to go home, cook, clean and look after their babies and their hard working husbands. This idea back fired on the government as women had a taste of freedom and began to realize they had the brains to be more than just mothers and doing housework until the day they died. They fought back and little by little were accepted into the workforce, but generally as a telephone operator; secretary, nurse, teacher, etc. Today women can be single with a great career ahead of them; but there are also women that can and will juggle their family life with a career. Women are recognized as doctors, lawyers, politicians, etc., but, there is always that twinge of sexism by men in a career orientated company. Even today with the freedom women have they are the glue that binds the family structure and makes most of the social arrangements with her and her partner.
