Federalism has a great affect on the two party government system in the U.S. Federalism provides a design that helps to prevent too much power being given to one single group within the government. It also helps to protect the rights and freedoms of the people within the country.

Federalism is idea that the state and federal government should share power. We've seen over the last 100 years how the federal government has slowly eroded the rights of state and local government. The Republicans don't have anything on their platform that would defend state's rights, nor do the Democrats.

Federalism played a major role in the shaping of America's first political parties, however. The Federalist were supporters of a strong national government, led byAlexander Hamilton. The Democratic-Republicans, led by Thomas Jefferson, generally opposed the federal government. They believe the majority of the power should be controlled by the state and local governments, because the people at the local level could deal with problems better.
