There is no clear and precise definition of good moral character. US courts have defined it to mean "character that measures up to the standards of average citizens of the community where you live."

For naturalization purposes in the United States, some things that are considered for good moral character are:

  • Have not been convicted of any controlled substance law, except for a single offense of simple possession of 30 grams or less of marijuana
  • Have not been imprisoned on a conviction for 180 days or more
  • Do not have convictions for two or more gambling offenses
  • Have not been involved in prostitution
  • Have not smuggled illegal aliens into the US
  • Are not and have never been a habitual drunkard
  • If you are a male, you have not registered with the US Selective Service Program between the ages of 18 and 25.

Moral character is determined by one's belief system. While some base this on their own personal beliefs, others base it on a belief in a higher being or a set of religious beliefs. While everyone does not have the same standards for how good moral character is determined, most agree that people with good moral character do not do things like lie, steal, and murder.
