The Battle of Brandywine Creek was fought near Philadelphia on September 11, 1777.

The British under General Wm Howe beat the Colonials, but unfortunately for him, the Colonial Army was still in a fighting condition.

Howe went to Philadelphia hoping that an uprising of Loyalists would join him so that he could clobber the Colonial Army in Pennsylvania, thus spitting the Colonies in half.

That never happened and Howe had effectively cut himself out of the War, leaving British forces under General Burgoyne without much needed reinforcements as he went into the Battle of Saratoga where they were soundly beaten.
