Since Washington was in charge it was his fault and he was given a paper to sign confessing to the murder. In the 1700's all educated gentlemen knew how to speak and read French, but Washington didn't know French. He didn't want to admit this so he signed all the papers written in French admitting he was responsible for the death of the ambassador.
