The Confederate armies, running out of food and supplies, eventually surrendered to the larger, better-equipped Union armies. This occurred rather quickly after Union forces under General William T. Sherman cut a swath through the South on his March to the Sea (November-December 1864).

On April 3, 1865, the Confederate capital at Richmond, Virginia was captured and on April 9, 1865, Confederate commanding general Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House. The remaining Southern armies mostly stopping fighting within the next few weeks.

American Revolution ended because the British got tired of fighting the whole world. Also because of politics within the British Govt. In fact the American Rev has been called "Britain's Vietnam".

Everybody says the Battle of Yorktown in 1781 was the last battle but in fact it was the last major land battle on the North American continent. There were land and sea battles going on all over the world.

What started out as a little rebellion in some British colonies turned into a world war. First France declares war on the UK. This prompted fighting in India where troops from both nations happened to be when the Franco-American alliance was created. Holland gave the US money and supplies so the UK declared war on them. Spain "unofficially" supported us. They provided us with money and supplies but never officially supported us out of the fear that their colonies might revolt. Eventually Spain chose to take advantage of Britain's problems and declared war on Britain.

There were land battles in Europe, India, US and Canada. There were sea battles in the Atlantic, the Pacific, and the Indian Oceans as well as the Caribbean Sea. Not all battles were US vs UK but land and sea battles UK vs Spain, UK vs France and, in sea battles only, UK vs Holland.

After Yorktown, 1781, negotiations began with France, US and UK. The negotiations kept stalling because a) US wanted independence but UK didn't want to give us independence and b) France kept wanting to squeeze us out and get their own interests looked after whether the US got independence or not.

For almost the entire war, the UK was attempting to suppress the rebellion and go after those supplying us. No attempt to negotiate. The govt and King were pro-war. After Yorktown, political support in Parliament for the war declined severely and the pro-war Prime Minister fell and an anti-war PM and govt was put in. The new PM entered into negotiations.

Between 1781 Yorktown and the 1783 Treaty of Paris were several skirmishes in the US and various sea battles, the last actual battle was off of the Indian coast.

So, loss of political will in London led to the end of the war. The Brits thought this would be over quick but instead they were fighting France, Holland and Spain all over the world. You need money and political will in your Congress or Parliament to fight a war. The Brits were hemorrhaging money and after Yorktown lost political will. The US didn't truly win, the UK merely chose to give up, cut their losses, and get out with the best deal they can get.

Britain ended the Revolutionary War because she lost the war. The deciding event was the Battle of Yorkton. British General Cornwallis and his 8,000 men were surrounded by American and French troops on land, and blockaded by the French Navy in Chesapeake Bay. Britain's Lord Cornwallis finally surrendered on October 19, 1781. With this defeat, Britain essentially lost all hope of being able to win the war, although a few military skirmishes continued for another year or two. The Treaty of Paris, signed on September 3, 1783, formally ended the war and recognized the independence of the United States.
