During the American Revolution the way women were affected depended on location. Those unlucky enough to be in the path of Major Ferguson or General Tarleton had their houses burned and if they had not gotten out of the way of their armies, they were killed. Some women went hungry. The women of New York City suffered from horrible abuse from the British army. (Many of the privates in the British Army were recruited from the jails and prisons.) In some locations, the women were almost unaware that a war was going on. Some teen age girls fooled the recruiters into thinking they were boys and joined the army. Some women participated in particular battles. Many women performed staff functions such as nursing and cooking. The way the war affected women varied greatly.
