I believe more accurately it can be said that Washington D.C. is a city without a state or that it is the capital city of the United States. The Wiki page says Washington D.C. is a compact city bordering the states of Maryland and Virginia. I understand that residents of Washington D.C. can not vote in elections that pertain to the state of Maryland for instance. I was born at Georgetown University Hospital and this question has bugged me since elementary school. What state was I born in? None or all states?

Washington D.C. is part of no state. It is a federal district formed in 1790. The U.S. Constitution does not mention D.C. because D.C. didn't exist when the Constitution was signed. Article 1 empowered congress to form a federal capital district. To me that makes one born in D.C. a federal capital district citizen.
