I do agree that independence is a universal need. Then make a few claims of why (or why not) it is a universal need such as because humans need freedom in order to live a full and happy life. Unlike the latter, the Declaration did not assert that Americans have a right to independence because of their ethnic, cultural, religious, or linguistic distinctiveness. Instead, the Declaration justifies independence on the basis of universal human rights.
