People might say that his Irish Catholic heritage and his Roman Catholic religion hurt him. It surely did cost him some votes particularly in the South , but it also gave him votes in the Northeast and Chicago and maybe with Hispanics in Texas and California. His record in the Senate was not at all impressive and his experience in foreign affairs paled beside his opponent.
