The New Deal was a series of domestic programs enacted in the United States between 1933 and 1936 with several announced by executive order 1936-1937. Roosevelt gathered an infortmal group of advisers known as the 'Brain Trust', whose suggestions were grounded in belief that pragmatic government assistance was needed to boost the American economy from the effects the Great Depression.

Roosevelt's Sect of Labor, Ms Francis Perkins, greatly influenced his initiatives. Her list of priorities included "a forty-hour workweek, a minimum wage, worker's compensation, unemployment compensation, a federal law banning child labor, direct federal aid for unemployment relief, Social Security, a revitalized public employment service and health insurance," and many of these were incorporated into the New Deal.
