Yes the Bill of Rights was created to outline specific Rights every citizen of this new nation had as a birth right. They were those "Rights" which began with the Magna Carta, and evolved throughout English History up to American independence, and from the lesson learned from British Rule.

As a result you see a wide range of Rights. Not just the First Amendment Rights listed in the original question, but also dealing with the Right to keep and bear arms, Quartering Soldiers, Search and arrest, Fair trial, and so on.

In today's world these may seem a given based on how the education system presents it. In 1788 it was not. The Federalists felt the Constitution contained all the personnel protections needed. The Anti-Federalists were having no part in it. Spearheaded by George Mason, the Anti-Federalists developed 12 Amendments to the Constitution.

While many Federalists such as Alexander Hamilton did not want the Amendments added because they believed these "Rights" were already implied in the Constitution, it was necessary to compromise with the Anti-Federalists in order to have the Constitution ratified by the several States. As a result the third to the twelfth proposed amendments were ratified and became what we call today The Bill of Rights, the bed rock of individual freedoms and protections in America today.

It was good to protect the freedom of individuals.
