A constitution is a document that contains all the rules and regulations,the divisions of powers between the government and the electorate and also the body that sets the limits between the governor and the governed.And when it comes to the merits and the demerits there is a lot to it.We will first deal with that of the merits written constitution,it is able to control arbitrary rule or governance in a sense that it places a check on the powers of the ruler so as not abuse his powers or exceed the limits which have been prescribed by the constitution.again a written constitution is far advantageous because it is difficult to modify or change,sometimes when the rulers become to obsessed with power they try to change some of the rules in order to suit their interest ,and seem as it may the only way by which a constitution can be modified is referendum or plebescite

Advantages of written constitution

1. It has the advantages of clearness and definiteness;

2. It protects the people from frequent and violent fluctuations of public opinion;

3. It gives strong feeling of right and powerful impetus to action to have the written law clearly on one's side; and

4. It serve as guide and bases of the people when their rights and liberties and invalid or endangered.

Disadvantages of written constitution

1. It establishes iron-clad rules which are difficult to change even if found inconvenient or oppressive ;

2. It is often construed on technical principles rather than in the light of great principles ; and

3. It is likely to invade the domains of ordinary legislation.
