The Vice President takes over as President when the President dies or becomes unable to perform his duties under the Constitution. He is also President of the Senate and will be called upon to cast the deciding vote in the event of a tie.

The vice president is the presiding officer of the Senate. He can not vote unless there is a tie vote. In that case, he can vote to break the tie.

He also must be able to step in as President, either temporarily or permanently.

Amendment 25 outlines the procedure by which the vice-president can temporarialy assume the powers of the President and later relinquish those powers.
