There were economic depression problems in 1896 especially with farmers. Most blamed the problems on the "gold standard." William Jennings Bryan was pushing for "free silver." At the time, American money was tied to the amount of gold we had in the US treasury. The farmers wanted to be able to borrow money cheaply and pay back loans with inflated money. They felt that adding silver to the gold suppy would help them.
