The Children's Overseas Relocation Board was only in full operation for about 3 months in 1940.
A ship carrying 90 British children to Canada was torpedoed and sunk in September, 1940 causing the deaths of at least 77 children. Since the threat of imminent German invasion had diminished, and convoys were effectively resupplying the UK, the CORB program was terminated. About 2600 children had been relocated to Canada, New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa. As many as 800,000 schoolchildren were still being evacuated to areas of rural Britain, although many returned to their homes after a short time.

Mercantilist theories caused European nations to abandon their overseas colonies.
The evacuation plan during World War 2 was flawed in several ways. First of all, the government created a panic by using exaggerated figures for casualties. This panic worked against smooth moving, and caused a bottleneck in the operation. Once the children had arrived in the countryside, they found little or no preparation had been made. As a result, the children arrived at the wrong locations, had few rations, and found out there were not enough homes to accommodate the children.
