The main challenge was keeping their power and lands. They had to follow the dictates of the church who could excommunicate them for things they did that the church didn't like and they had to fight the other people who wanted the power. This included people in their own families. An example of this was King Edward and his wife Katherine of Aragon. She plotted against him to put her sons on the throne and when he found this out he imprisoned her for 13 years.
