Obviously John Brown was an abolitionist and was very adamant about his position. His plan was unsuccessful and they were caught before the guns were ever stolen.
Brown had become frustrated with the amount of time it was taking for the Abolitionist Movement to succeed through peaceful means. He had used violence in Pottawatomie, Kansas, and was determined to act as a provocateur to begin a revolt of the slaves throughout the South.
