Washington died of a cold or sore throat after making the morning rounds of his plantation. This was part of his routine and even though it was cold and raining he refused to stay home. This made his cold worse and within two days was dead. He was given a Masonic funeral at Mt. Vernon while Martha watched from an upstairs bedroom window.
