Under Roman law, women actually had the same rights as men with the exception of voting rights, running for public office and joining the military. However the enacting of those rights was often more difficult for a woman than for a man. For example, while a woman could make a will, she could not be the beneficiary of a will unless it was from another woman. A wife was only legally allowed to inherit a small amount from her husband or any other male member of her family. A woman could initiate a divorce, but a man had to "file the papers" so to speak, as there were negotiations regarding dowries and their return. In other words, even though women had their rights in ancient Rome, they needed male help in using them.

Women in the Roman Republic could do just about anything except vote and hold public office. There were even women lawyers. However, you have to remember the culture of the times. In the Roman and many other ancient cultures, women had the domestic and Behind the Scenes roles and they were content with that. They felt uncomfortable stepping into what was considered "men's business" (at least in public). The men too, were uncomfortable with a woman who was perceived to be too masculine. Even so, there were women land owners, business owners, craftspersons, etc. They had legal rights of limited inheritance and the right to make a will. Women were not taxed on their wealth either.
