The tenth amendment of the US Constitution prohibited certain practices by the states. This amendment stated that the states could only have powers which were not already overseen by the federal government.

State rights gave the states some power to decide on certain regulations instead of giving the Federal government all the power to control all the regulations. Some people think that by giving the states some power then the federal government wont have too much power to become dictator like or monarchy and stuff like that. Or tyranny which is the use of unjust power.
The 16th amendment made a federal income tax legal. This tax soon became a major source of revenue for the federal government. By giving tax breaks to businesses and individuals for certain actions, the federal government can regulate to some degree ,at least, many facets of American life and economic activities.
