People should strive for themselves to better their lives not to count on the government to solve their problems. Less taxation, they believe your money should remain yours not the governments. Depends. Some say it is Thomas Jefferson as part of the Democratic-Republicans. Otherwise it would be Lincoln who ran under the "Republican" ticket to be acknowledged as a Republican president. If you mean the first Republican that has the same political ideology as the current Republicans, then that would be Nixon.
