This saying is an old slang term; possibly going back to the time when John Hancock (1737 [1736] - 1793), a merchant, stateman, and prominent Patriot of the American Revolution, as well as President of the Second Continental Congress, signed the Declaration of Independence with a large and stylish signature ( he did this so that King George III of Great Britain could read it without his spectacles ).. His name soon became a synonym for signature...This is what it means by "Sign your John Hancock".
