in the parliamentary system the country is split up into little regions these regions are called ridings. every riding gets their own m.p. (member of parliament). you use these ridings during the federal elections by going to the voting station (based on the riding that you live in). you do not vote for the prime minister you vote for an m.p. the prime minister is determined by which party gets the most ridings or m.p's. the leader of the party (voted in by the members of that party) becomes prime minister the second place party's leader becomes leader of the opposition
