Well, Ben Franklin and some of his fellow patriots wanted to establish national symbols (sort of like they had in the old country) and many wanted the Eagle to be our symbol as it was determined that the eagle was majestic and strong. However, Mr. Franklin wanted the Turkey to be our symbol. As he saw it, the Turkey had keen eyesight and was fleet of foot and wing and was quite elusive to the early hunters in this country. Eventually, might won out over wit and today, the turkey is our symbol.
The Bald Eagle became the symbol for the United States on June 20, 1782. It was chosen for it's majestic looks, it's long life, and it's great strength.
