The first known Hoover to come to the United States was a Bar Hoover in 1711. A number of well-known Americans were born with the Hoover surname: 1. Herbert Clark Hoover (b 1874 - d 1964; 31st President of the United States); 2. J. Edgar Hoover (b 1875 - d 1972: American director of the Federal Bureau of Investigations for 48 years); 3. Stevin Ray Hoover (b. 1948, founder of the eponymous Boston money management firm); 4. William Henry Hoover (b. 1839, d. 1932, who bought a pattern for the electric cleaning machine and started the Hoover Suction Sweeper Co., later known as Hoover Vacuums); and 5. Margaret Hoover (b. 1977, a conservative political commentator and Fox News contributor; great-granddaughter of the 31st President). The Hoovervacuum cleaner was so popular that people, particularly in the U.K., started calling all vacuum cleaners "Hoovers."
