English Catholics settled in Maryland because Catholics were being persecuted in England. They sailed to North America and found refuge in Maryland for those that felt religiously oppressed.
McCulloch v. Maryland settled that the National Bank was constitutional. Also it settled that Maryland does not have the power to tax a institution created by congress.
Both were settled solely by English colonists.

In 1664, the Maryland assembly passed the Toleration Act, which allowed religious freedom in the colony to all Christians.
It is impossible to know for sure how many people were living in Maryland, since they didn't have any census' or ways of recording exact numbers. The best estimate would be that up until about 1650, Maryland had less than 1,000 residents, but after 1650, the population increased rapidly. By the 1680's the population of Maryland was estimated to be between 26,00 and 31,000.
