The US initially operated under a charter called the Articles of Confederation

(Articles of Confederation and Perpetual Union) drawn up in 1776 and ratified in 1781.

The second document, which replaced the Articles, is simply called the US Constitution.

It was adopted on September 17, 1787 and ratified on June 21, 1788. Since its ratification, 27 amendments or changes have been added to the basic document to modify how the government operates under its articles.
