In the early days of Jamestown and so forth, the Powhatan Indians as well as other used the name weroance as what they called the highest chief and leader. The weroance could even be a chief of multiple tribes who he had appointed chiefs to rule over but in the end he had full control.

There were different head dresses worn for different reasons / occasions. The most recognizable of these is a 'war bonnet' - normally only worn when the tribe was 'at war'.
