Well the declaration says "we hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator by certain unalienable rights" (these rights being life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness)

The "self evident" truths of the Declaration of the Independence are as follows...

"...that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."

This clause is often used to help define the term "human rights," with the assumption that most, if not all people, can agree that all of these rights are important and nobody should be denied them (i.e., everyone has a right to his or her own life and a right to be happy).
