The passing of stories, specifically history/culture, by word of mouth from generation to generation is called an "oral tradition". There are numerous examples, and it can be found in any culture which has no formal writing system. Ancient examples include Judaism while modern examples include most tribal groups (even Native Americans, who now write in English, have no native written language) .

Before people could read and write stories were told to them. Robin Hood began as an oral story in the 1200's and through the centuries it has changed. The church put on passion plays to teach The Bible stories and made stained glass windows telling the stories. There were people who moved from place to place called bards who told stories and the latest news. This was the only way for people to learn what was happening in other places and enjoy a story over a campfire.

Stories passed down from generation to generation are called oral history, oral tradition, legends, or folklore. It is what people did before books were made.
