to keep up with the population ...

It helps countries figure out exactly how many people they are supporting, so they can better estimate how to allocate funds. Specifically in the United States, the census taken every 10 years is key in determining the allocation of Congressional Representatives.

It is in fact pointless. As all this information is taken yearly by tax return statements. Wait not everyone pays taxes... Well they probably don't deserve represenation.

The US census is believed by some to be to count the population of the US. But it is really used to decide on how many electoral votes each state should receive when it comes time to vote, however the larger the population the more electoral votes your state will receive to an extent. Electoral votes are limited and so population does not scale properly to electoral votes.

Well in edition to the answer provided by our friend; here is what I contribute:

A census calculates the population of a country which can be used for many things, such as locating places to put public service facilities (schools, post offices, roads, libraries,etc.).

In a census the citizen is asked questions about their jobs, income, and family members (children). This allows the government to see the average income of citizens, and predict the population of the future
