There are a number of different styles of totalitarianism which are all heavily authoritarian. The most extreme form appears to be Stalinism. There presently remains only one Stalinist state left on Earth, which is North Korea.

Similar to a dictatorship, this form of government compels the people to do it's bidding with no accountability to the people. Human rights is not a big concern with this type of regime. North Korea is an example of an authoritarian government.
Generally speaking a violent takeover of a government by an absolute ruler is termed a dictatorship. This type of government has many variations, however, the main result of this is clearly a dictatorship.

The most common type of government worldwide is democracy, where the people have a say in decision-making through elected representatives. There are different forms of democracy, such as representative democracy and direct democracy, depending on how the government is structured.
