∙ 11y agoSlavery was the big issue. Specifically whether to allow slavery in the new territories and states that might join the union later. There was a movement to outlaw slavery throughout the United States, but that would require a Constitutional amendment which could passed if 3/4 of the states agreed to forbid slavery. There was also concern that escaped slaves who fled to non-slave states would not be returned.
