The building and steps are constructed from white marble. At the center of the monument is a bronze statue of President Jefferson.

The building may be reinforced with concrete or steel support beams. As the ground beneath the monument is quite swampy, there is certainly much use of pilings, probably of reinforced concrete, to stabilize the supporting ground.
