Russia. He did this so he didn't have to worry about Russia when he invades Poland. The agreement is signed in August and he invades Poland in September just a few days after the agreement is signed. This was no mistake by Hitler, but planned by him. As soon as he invades the British react and declare war. He miscalculated the actions of what the British would do. Within a month Poland is divided up between Germany and Russia.

The Soviet Union signed the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact with Germany in August, 1939. The USSR did not want to give up its own plans to acquire the territory of Poland, so the two countries essentially divided Poland between them, and agreed to Soviet territorial acquisitions in the Baltic States, Romania, and Finland. After Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939 (triggering World War II), the USSR occupied the opposite half of Poland beginning on September 17.

This agreement ended with the invasion of the USSR by Germany in Operation Barbarossa (June, 1941).
