A number of wars continued to be fought throughout 2008 but did not start in 2008 such as the following:

Afghanistan War

Somalian Civil war

Mexico Drug War

The Maoist War in India etc

However the only notable war to start in 2008 was the Russian-Georgian conflict (South Ossetian War)

In total there were 8 wars in 2008. However there were many more which are not classed as wars but as insurgencies etc such as the ongoing Chechen insurgency in Russia.
