Washington's most historic act in 1791 was to establish the national capital within the District of Columbia. Under the Residence Act of 1790, the District was created out of portions of Virginia and Maryland that bordered the Potomac River. Washington set up a commission and hired architects to design the new city, which was subsequently named Washington to honor him. Washington also toured the southern states of North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia in the spring of 1791.
George Washington added the words "So help me God." to the end of the oath of office that he took when being sworn in as president. The actual wording of the oath is in Article II of the Constitution and does not contain that phrase. Washington added it on his own.
