NEW ANSWER:
In October 1780, the Continental Congress named Major General Nathanael Greene to replace Gates as commander of the Southern army. Greene was a superb choice because he knew how to accomplish much with extremely few resources. Greene divided his troops into two small armies. He led one army and put Brigadier General Daniel Morgan in charge of the other.
Green hoped to avoid battle with Cornwallis' far stronger force while he rebuilt the Southern army. Instead, Greene planned to let the British chase the Americans around the countryside.
General Cornwallis set out to trap Morgan's army. Just before the British caught up with him, Morgan prepared for battle in a cattle-grazing area known as Cowpens, in northern South Carolina.
On January 17, 1781, Morgan's sharpshooting riflemen quickly killed or captured nearly all the onrushing redcoats. The patriot victory at Cowpens enraged Cornwallis, and he would now pursue Morgan with even greater determination.
The Battle of Cowpens was a battle during the Revolutionary war that was a victory for the Continental army. During the battle, the Continental army both outsmarted and outmaneuvered the British forces. They set up their lines on the battlefield in a way that resulted in 40% of the casualties from the British forces being their commanding officers. There were three lines of American soldiers, that grew in size as the British made their way forward. Because the British thought the retreating of each individual line was an actual retreat, they pressed forward only to be assaulted by more soldiers in the next line. The battle continued as American forces circled around and attacked the British forces from behind. During the battle, 110 British soldiers were killed, 229 were wounded, and 829 were captured or went missing. For the Americans, only 25 of their soldiers were killed with 124 being wounded.
Cowpens was a smashing victory for the Americans. Only about 110 British troops escaped, the rest being killed or captured. Cornwallis had been moving north with his main body, with light, quick flanking forces out to either side. One of these flanking forces was completely annihilated at Kings Mountain three months before The Cowpens, and the other was destroyed at The Cowpens. So though both Kings Mountain and The Cowpens were relatively small battles they had a strategic effect greatly disproportionate to the number of men involved. These two Patriot victories, coupled with the hard battle at Guilford Courthouse two months after The Cowpens, put Cornwallis on the path to Yorktwon, defeat, and American Independence.
