For the most part, the five Lincoln-Douglas debates in 1858 centered around the issue of slavery. Lincoln, who although was well known in Illinois, gained national attention as Douglas was a famous politician with a national reputation. Newspaper coverage was extensive.
This was the nickname of Illinois congressman Stephen A. Douglas, who became nationally known for a series of debates he had with Abraham Lincoln.

The transportation route that extended from Cumberland, Maryland to Vandalia, Illinois is known as the National Road. It is a 620 mile road that was built by the federal government. In 2002 it was officially designated as "The Historic National Road, an All-American Road."
