The Mayans and Toltecs built vast cities, created government bureaucracies that controlled large and carried population groups. Additionally, they developed hieroglyphic writings and an accurate solar calendar. While they did not build the large cities, the powerful Aztecs came to dominate and control the vast cities of their rivals. The Algonquian were settled along the Atlantic seaboard creating many different dialects of a common language. Many of their tribal leaders were great speakers, using their rhetorical abilities to wield power. This was important to gaining support for tribal policies. The Columbian Exchange involved Europeans bringing to the Americas sugar, bananas, Oranges, pigs, sheep, cattle and horses. These successfully altered the Indian diet, economy, and way of life. In addition, the Indian maize, squash, tomatoes, and potatoes were introduced to the Europeans, altering their diet as well. While these positive aspects benefitted both societies, the diseases brought by Europeans were detrimental to the Indian cultures. They lacked immunities to European diseases, such as smallpox, measles, and the flu.
