Newfoundland and Labrador is a province of Canada, located at the north-eastern corner of North America. After a time being part of the Portuguese kingdom, in the year 1583, Sir Humphrey Gilbert, following orders and permission from Queen Elizabeth I formally took possession of the island of St John, and Newfoundland became the first British colony in North America. It was until the year 1949 that Newfoundland officially became part of Canada.
