Proprietary government
Proprietary Government
The proprietary government in the American colonies began in the early 17th century, notably with the establishment of Maryland in 1632 as a proprietary colony granted to Cecil Calvert, the Second Baron Baltimore. This form of government allowed individual proprietors to govern the land and make decisions regarding its administration. Other examples include Pennsylvania, granted to William Penn in 1681, and Carolina, divided into separate proprietary areas in the 1660s. These proprietary governments lasted until the late 18th century when many transitioned to royal control or other forms of governance.
