In the United States they meet almost every day and can meet everyday. Originally they were to guarantee one meeting a year, but never on the Sabbath (Sunday). Until the late 19th early 20th century Mass was held in the Government Office's in Washington each Sunday.

So much for the "story" of separation of Church and State

A new session commences on January 3 each year unless Congress decides differently. The Constitution requires Congress meet at least once each year and forbids either house from meeting outside the Capitol.
