George Washington was a Congressional delegate from Virginia when hostilities began in 1775. On June 15, the Continental Congress appointed him Commander-in-Chief of the colonial forces. The Americans were victorious and signed the Treaty of Paris on September 3, 1783. Washington gave up his military position on November 1, 1783.

His first military career was with the Virginia Militia, which supplemented the British army forces in the French and Indian War (1754-1758). In 1753, at the age of 31, Washington became a district adjutant (with the rank of major), a position he inherited from his deceased brother Lawrence. He served in the militia until December 1758.

In 1775, he was a delegate to the Continental Congress when open war erupted, beginning the American Revolution. With his military experience, Washington was the logical choice to lead the Continental Army, at the age of 43. He resigned his military commission as Commander-in-Chief on December 23, 1783 at the age of 51.

After serving as chairman of the Constitutional Convention in 1787, Washington was elected the first US President under the new Constitution in 1788.
