Just after his inauguration Washington lived between two houses, the Samuel Osgood House and the Alexander Macomb House, both in New York City. In July of 1790 Philadelphia was named the temporary capital of the United States, and Washington then occupied Robert Morris's city house and worked in the Market Street Mansion, both in Philadelphia of course. The White House did not finish construction until the presidency of John Adams in the year 1800.
