Bush's family were wealthy and belonged to the New England Old Yankee aristocracy that were progressive Republicans and strongly believed in civil rights. His father served 2 terms as a moderate Republican from Connecticut in the 1950's. This old Yankee pragmatic Republicanism is no longer in existence in New England. George H.W. Bush came from a different generation of political leaders. He was taught at an early age, never to bragg about his accomplishments and to always be civil and clean in debating one's opponents. He carried these traits with him when he became President. To his credit, during his reelection in 1992, he was pressured by his political advisors, to beat up on Clinton which he refused. He never believe in mudslinging!
