During the Iron Curtain, Churchill warned that the Communist tyranny was threatening Europe. Truman invited Churchill where he alerted the free world by saying "From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic an iron curtain has descended across the continent
The "Iron Curtain" is a boundary which divided Europe into two separate zones, symbolically, politically and physically .This began at the end of World War II and continued until the end of the Cold War, i.e. from about 1945 to 1990. With the Iron Curtain in place, some of the Eastern and Central European countries were under the political influence of the Soviet Union. Exceptions were West Germany, Liechtenstein, Switzerland and Austria.
The term "Iron Curtain" was originally used during World War II by German Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels and later Count Lutz Schwerin von Krosigk towards the end of the war. It was popularised by British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who first used it in his "Sinews of Peace" address at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri, on 5 March 1946, during which he stated:
"From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic an "iron curtain" has descended across the Continent. Behind that line lie all the capitals of the ancient states of Central and Eastern Europe. Warsaw, Berlin, Prague, Vienna, Budapest, Belgrade, Bucharest and Sofia; all these famous cities and the populations around them lie in what I must call the Soviet sphere, and all are subject, in one form or another, not only to Soviet influence but to a very high and in some cases increasing measure of control from Moscow."
The iron curtain separated Western Europe and the united states from eastern Europe.More precisely, the iron cutain separated communist nations allied with the Soviet Union from the democratic nations
It was better known as the Berling wall because Russia had the east and US has de west. It went further more so in the related links box below I will post a link into the wikipedia iron curtain article
The Iron Curtain was first referred to in a speech by Churchill while in the US.
The "iron curtain" was a reference made by Winston Churchill to an imaginary dividing line between Eastern and Western Europe, with Eastern European countries under the control of the Soviet Union having been cordoned off from Western European countries, politically, economically, socially (with little chance for Eastern European citizenry to travel freely during the Cold War period).
During the Iron Curtain, Churchill warned that the Communist tyranny was threatening Europe. Truman invited Churchill where he alerted the free world by saying "From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic an iron curtain has descended across the continent…I do not believe that Soviet Russia desires war. What they desire is the fruits of war and the indefinite expansion of their power and doctrines." (Confirmed by Soviet action). Instead of agreeing to free elections in post war, Stalin sponsored communist governments in border nations like Poland, Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria. The soviets demanded military bases in Turkey to take control of the Bosporus Strait that opens the Mediterranean Sea to the black Sea. He sponsored communist rebels in Greece.
Southeast Asia and that is one reason the Vietnam war took place.
Immediately after the end of WW2. The Soviets (Russians) were determined to place a government of their own choosing in Poland without interference from Britain or the US. (or Poland for that matter !)
In 1956, there was an uprising behind the iron curtain in Hungary. The uprising was named the Hungarian Revolution and lasted for only a few weeks. During this time 3000 men, women, and children of Hungary were killed.
The concept of the Iron Curtain symbolized the ideological fighting and physical boundary dividing Europe into two separate areas from the end of World War II in 1945 until the end of the Cold War in 1991.
