Only the roads leading from one town to the next were well traveled or maintained. So passing through a town a stranger could simply stay on the best road and know he was headed for the next town. The exceptions were at crossroad towns or the well maintained road to the church ending in the burial yard. A nice road that went nowhere ended at the DEAD, end of the road.
